WINNIPEG (CP) _ The Manitoba government is forcing thousands of
vehicle owners to get anti-theft immobilizers or risk losing their
car insurance.
Starting Sept. 1, Manitobans with vehicles on the most-at risk
list will need to install the electronic devices before they can
renew their insurance and registration through the province's car
insurer.
The crackdown is the government's latest answer to a serious car
theft problem in Manitoba, particularly in Winnipeg.
It's believed to be the first province to enact such a law.
About 47,000 motorists own vehicles on the most-at-risk list.
Only vehicles that are used in and around Winnipeg are being
targeted.
