Swedish truckmaker Volvo AB's North American division said Monday it will cut about 1,000 jobs at an assembly plant in Dublin, Va., next year because of an expected drop in demand.
The layoffs at the New River Valley Plant, which employs about 3,170 workers and produces vehicles for both Volvo and its subsidiary Mack Trucks Inc., will take place during the first quarter of 2007, the company said in a statement.
``This is a difficult decision, but one that's unavoidable,'' said Jan Stromberg, general manager of the plant.
``We regret the impact this action will have on our people and the New River Valley community, and we are committed to working with the affected employees to assist them in this difficult transition.''
