The board of the Japanese automaker Nissan agreed today
to open talks with General Motors on a possible alliance.
Major G-M shareholder Kirk Kerkorian proposed last week that the
troubled American carmaker join the Nissan-Renault alliance.
Nissan says it will talk with G-M if G-M endorses Kerkorian's
proposal.
G-M says it's taking Kerkorian's plan under advisement.
In France, the finance minister says the board of Renault plans
to discuss the purchase of a significant stake in G-M with Nissan.
Renault's board meets today.
