NEW YORK (AP) _ Mercedes-Benz USA said Tuesday its August U.S.
sales rose, fuelled by sharp increases in sales of its luxury
sport-utility vehicles.
Total sales rose 1.8 per cent to 20,980, compared with 20,602
during August last year. The automaker said it was its best August
sales month on record.
Sales of Mercedes' M-Class mid-size SUVs rose 32.4 per cent, to
3,062 from 2,312 a year ago. Sales of the larger GL-class rose 38.1
per cent to 2,615 from 1,894 previously.
So far this year, Mercedes has sold 157,806 vehicles in the U.S.,
up 0.4 per cent from the 157,128 sold during the same period in
2006. Adjusting for one less selling day last year, the carmaker's
sales are down less than 0.1 per cent.
Mercedes-Benz USA is a division of DaimlerChrysler AG, the German
automaker that recently sold most of its stake in U.S.-based
Chrysler through a sale to Cerberus Capital Management LP.
